Social media is a very broad term. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines it as: "forms of electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content." 

Social media tools/platforms/services include Facebook, blogs, Twitter, Flickr, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and there are many more. Mashable Australia defines a social networking service as: "an online service, platform, or site that focuses on facilitating the building of social networks or social relations among people who, for example, share interests, activities, backgrounds, or real-life connections."
