The non-alcoholic beverage industry has come a long way since the days of Claytons® which grew in popularity in Australia and New Zealand in the late 1970's and 80's. Many people will remember the very macho Jack Thompson ordering a Claytons and saying that it is the drink he has when he's not having a drink. This has become a widely used saying amongst Australians and New Zealanders and the term is often used when referring to an imitation, inferior substitute or compromise. It's widespread usage has ended up with the term being added to various urban and slang dictionaries.
With the advent of random breath testing in the late 1970's the marketing angle was to appeal to people who wanted to drink something that tasted like alcohol but wouldn't cause them to risk losing their driver licence. Gone are the days we need a macho looking guy to make us feel empowered to choose alcohol-free drinks and the market has gone ahead in leaps and bounds with products across all the spirit styles. There are so many options now besides alcohol-free beer and wine that you can recreate your favourite cocktails and explore other mixed drinks. Check out the range of Zero%* alcohol drinks available at Dan Murphy's that might spark your curiosity. Here at Drysdale Library we have just purchased some new mocktail books that include all the traditional favourites plus many more.
